Sony DSC TX7 Reviewed

The Sony DSC-TX7 packs a lot of features into a small, lightweight digital camera. 

Some people are calling it the dream camera. Others are saying it is the best compact made ever.  Pretty bold claims. 

I had to find out on my own what all the fuss was about, so I got my hands on one to use for a weekend.

This little camera has a lot of what people have been waiting for and more. 

There are so many features it is hard to recap in a short amount of space.  I will highlight the ones that I found most helpful.

10.2-megapixel Back-illuminated "Exmor R" CMOS image sensor

It has this feature called “EXMOR R” which allows more light to enter the lens in low light situations.  The bottom line, it takes great pictures, both still and movie, in the darker lit environments.

Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens with 25mm equivalent wide 4x optical zoom

The camera uses a high-performance Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 4x optical zoom lens  which brings distant subjects closer for video recording.  Also the use of a wide angle 25mm lens works great for pictures in small rooms or crowded spaces.

3.5-inch Xtra Fine LCD touch screen display w/TruBlack technology

The touch screen display works great for viewing and sharing the images.  You just touch the screen and scroll through the images.  It is very smooth and easy to use.

Anti-Motion Blur Mode
The Anti Motion Blur Control dramatically reduces blur by taking 6 images in a fraction of a second.  This is way beyond the capability of other more expensive and traditional cameras.

Intelligent Sweep Panorama Mode
The Intelligent Sweep Panorama Mode is more than a gimmick.  This feature makes it possible to take sweeping panorama pictures at the touch of a single button.  The camera automatically stitches together the images as you sweep the camera across the area you want for the picture.  It even detects movement and faces so it intelligently puts everything together with distortion.

Backlight Correction HDR
The back light correction feature is automatic and helps with pictures that usually lose details if they have bright backgrounds and shadowed foregrounds.  It takes two pictures at different exposure settings and combines them into a single image that has a natural look.

High-speed shooting
The high speed shooting capability of this little camera is quite surprising.  You can take action shots and capture just the right instant, like a soccer ball bouncing off a foot or a skateboarder jumping and not miss the moment.

1080i AVCHD Movie Mode
It has a true High Definition (HD) movie mode.  Meaning it records movies at high definition (60 frames per second in 1080i) capturing a high degree of detail.

Self-Portrait Timer
It has a neat self portrait detection technology that takes the guess work out of taking self portraits.  When the camera detects tour face it automatically snaps a picture 2 seconds later.

Anti-blink Function
I just loved the anti blink feature.  This feature allows the camera to take two pictures and if someone is blinking in one it will only save the other.  It also has the ability to let you know if someone has blinked after the shot was taken.  No more surprises.

Face Detection helps direct the focus to the subject you want

On the subject of faces, it has face recognition ability that distinguishes between children and adult faces and automatically adjusts for unique light conditions and movement. 

It even has the ability to capture a smile the instant it happens.  Just press the Smile Shutter button and the camera does the rest. You can also select adult and child priority and indicate the degree of Smile Detection Sensitivity.  No more losing that smiling moment because of the normal delay with a digital camera.

PHOTOMUSIC
There is a photo music feature that allows you to combine images with music.  You can easily choose some tracks that are included with the camera or add from your personal collection.

Creative Painting Tools
Another feature I had fun with was the creative painting tools.  This allows you to decorate and personalize your pictures with words and drawings using a paint pen or even your finger.

In-Camera Retouching Tools
There is much more offered with this camera like a built in retouching feature to trim the size of a picture or remove red eye and more. 

What I Didn't Like About the Camera

It was hard to find anything I did not like about the Sony DSC-TX7.  If there were any cons all it might be with the price.  It is a little more than other digital camera in this same class.  But really, this camera is in a class all its own.  For all that it offers, the higher price, if you can afford it is more than justified.   I would definitely recommend checking it out today.
